The Shillito Wood field is accessible every day of the week for flying of electric, power and drones. Before flying here you must have provided a copy of your Insurance Certificate to the owner of the field. This must be sent to the club secretary.
Please see the document Shillito Wood Model Flying Group – Operational Guidelines for more information about flying at the Shillito site but see below for a brief run down.
Current Members of the SWMFG and those current members of The Sheffield Society of Aeromodellers (SSA) who have given that club’s secretary a copy of their current BMFA Insurance Certificate. The farmer requires a copy of the current insurance certificate for all flyers using the field therefore that precludes ‘guest flyers’.
Solo – Flyers who have demonstrated to SWMFG or SSA officers that they have reached a suitably safe standard (that required to qualify for the BMFA ‘A’ Certificate). This status is not transferable to any other site.
BMFA Examiners, and flyers’ holding BMFA ‘A’ or ‘B’ Certificates.
Dual – Members who have not reached solo standard. These pilots must fly only under the supervision of an approved Instructor or Supervisor.
Instructors / Supervisors
Specific individuals are nominated as Instructors or Supervisors in the belief that they are competent to safely provide instruction in ‘ground’ subjects as well as the flying of model aircraft.
Flying over the active car park, pits, pilots, spectators or the Shillito Wood Public Car Park is prohibited and overflying Shillito Wood should be avoided. If overflying the Wood cannot be avoided then pilots must have due regard for the safety of people, animals and property in the Wood and for the real and/or perceived threat and/or nuisance that the intrusion of a model aircraft can represent.
Access to the field is via a rough track. Cars can also be left at the bottom of the track on the lane. Use of the track leading from the road to the flying area, whether with a vehicle or on foot, is done entirely at the risk of individual users.
There are 3 parking areas at Shillito. Please use the appropriate one for the wind direction. Cars must only be parked in one location. The routes that the farmer takes between his fields can be clearly seen and these should not be blocked.
Once again please familiarise yourself with the Shillito Wood Model Flying Group – Operational Guidelines before flying at the Shillito site
The farmer has livestock on three adjoining and interconnected fields and on the flying field for around 4 months of the year. They are usually sheep and do not interrupt the flying as they move away when flyers are present.
If there are no animals in the areas marked X the gate at the bottom of the track can be left open between first arrival and last departure. If there are animals present the gate must be closed and locked immediately after every arrival and departure.
